Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre
Prison
The Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre (BWCC) is Queensland’s key female correctional facility. It is operated by Queensland Corrective Services and acts as the main reception, assessment and placement centre for female offenders from the southern region of the state.
Facility overview & features
- The centre has a dual accommodation design: one secure cell block and one residential‑style area. It originally had capacity for around 264 cells—122 secure and 142 residential.
- BWCC also includes a purpose‑built area enabling approved women to have their children live with them in custody, recognising the role of mothers and the importance of maintaining family connection.
- The centre emphasises industry, education and vocational training programs, as well as personal development and self‑esteem activities, tailored for women with varied and often complex needs.
Types of offences & inmate profiles
BWCC accommodates female prisoners across remand and sentenced statuses, including mainstream and protection classifications. Consequently, the types of criminal cases connected with BWCC encompass:
- Serious violent offences and major indictable matters leading to secure placement
- Offences requiring protection classification (e.g., vulnerable prisoners, those with specific safety concerns)
- Drug‑related and property crimes among women
- Cases involving remand and initial reception from the southern Queensland region
- Female offenders who are mothers—and for whom rehabilitation and family reintegration are central
Legal support & what BJH Law can do
If you or someone you know is detained at BWCC—or facing charges which may result in placement there—BJH Law provides comprehensive criminal law services including:
- Bail and remand representation, aimed at reducing time in pre‑trial detention and minimising impact of custody decisions
- Sentencing advocacy that includes classification strategy and realistic custodial outcomes for female offenders
- Transfer and classification review assistance when placement or security level is at issue
- Parole advice and support, particularly for women whose custodial journeys include rehabilitation, reintegration and family/child‑care dimensions
- Specific guidance recognising the gender‑responsive and trauma‑informed regime at BWCC, and the unique challenges female prisoners face
