Helana Jones Centre
Prison
The Helana Jones Centre (HJC) is a low‑security, women‑only facility managed by Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) and is designed for female prisoners who are assessed as low risk and are in the final phases of custody or moving towards reintegration.
Key features & operational context
- HJC accommodates up to approximately 26–29 women in home‑style accommodation.
- The centre allows approved women to have their children live with them in custody.
- It emphasises rehabilitation, skills development, community service, and reintegration. Women at HJC undertake community‑service tasks, vocational and life‑skills programs, and tailored support for issues such as parenting, budgeting, domestic/family violence, drug use and homelessness.
- The model is trauma‑informed, gender‑specific, and focuses on preparing residents for release and reducing recidivism.
Types of cases & suitability
HJC is not for women who are assessed as high‑risk or convicted of the most serious violent offences. Rather, it is targeted at:
- Women who have served part of their sentence (or are on remand) and have shown eligibility for low‑custody placement.
- Women with responsibilities (such as children) or for whom reintegration support is prioritized.
- Cases where the focus is on rehabilitation, transition and reintegration rather than only secure containment.
Legal support & what BJH Law can do
If you or someone you know is detained at Helana Jones Centre, or you face charges that may lead to placement there, BJH Law can assist with:
- Bail and remand applications, and classification strategy to aim for low‑custody outcomes.
- Sentencing advocacy with a focus on rehabilitation placement and reintegration.
- Parole and custody‑transition planning, especially for women eligible for low‑security facilities.
- Guidance on rights, obligations and the special considerations relevant to female offenders, mother‑and‑child placements, and rehabilitation‑oriented correctional settings.
Our team understands the unique environment of a facility such as Helana Jones Centre and can provide tailored legal advice to help you navigate the process and seek the best possible outcome.
